Hot Cocoa Toppings You Shouldn't Sleep On

I used to think that a cup of hot cocoa was something that came in a powdery pouch to be microwaved with some tap water. However, should you crave something a bit more indulgent - and don't have the patience to craft a hot cocoa bomb - I have since discovered a much more decadent, delicious concoction that takes a bit more TLC, but is all the more enjoyable.

But you can't just stop at upgrading your cocoa recipe. It's 2020, the time to invest in a new level of relaxation and lavish cozy things. So make it a family affair and garnish that cup of cocoa with a luscious topping or two.

Here's what you need for your hot cocoa creation:

  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips | 1 cup

  • Milk (I recommend 2 % milk however almond milk also works well) | 4 cups

  • Granulated Sugar | 1/3 cup

  • Cinnamon | 1 teaspoon

  • Vanilla extract | 2 teaspoons

Here's how to make it:

Throw all ingredients into a saucepan on medium-high heat.

Bring to a boil until all ingredients are smooth and combined.

It's really that simple!

Now we get to the fun part, toppings.

Yes, marshmallows are fun and all, but why stop there?

Other topping options can include (but are not limited to):

Peppermint. Crush up some peppermint and sprinkle it on top. Or, garnish your glass with a candy cane for a nice dash of peppermint flavor as the cane begins to melt in the warm drink.

Chocolate. A drizzle of chocolate syrup will be a great addition to any warm cup of cocoa. Or, add a piece of white chocolate peppermint bark to the top of your hot cocoa and it will melt to give you even richer chocolate flavor.

Whipped cream. A classic touch. Opt for a whipped cream spiral from a can of ready whip or go full force with homemade whipped topping (simply heavy cream, sugar, and whip!).

Add a delicious rim. Try dipping the rim of your glass in marshmallow fluff, then dip the covered rim in your favorite crushed candy, like crushed peppermint or chocolate chips.

Looking for more options? Try one of these:

  • Sprinkles

  • Freshly grated nutmeg

  • Chocolate shavings

  • White chocolate chips

  • Add a shot of bourbon or spiced rum
